Math Department

The Mathematics Department uses a Standards-Based approach within all the courses offered. This approach to teaching, grading, and learning allows students to take ownership of their understanding by continually self-assessing their proficiency on standards. This enables students to demonstrate proficiency at multiple opportunities throughout the course. We use this approach for a variety of reasons:

  • To encourage student ownership of their own learning
  • To support the students who might need more time on a given standard
  • To provide clear communication on the level of understanding that a student has for each standard
  • To foster a growth mindset in students so they realize that they can succeed if they put in the effort and work

Additionally, the Mathematics Department promotes the growth of problem-solving skills, real-life modeling, reasoning skills, and analyzing skills within each course. We offer cotaught sections in Geometry and Algebra 1 for students who need the extra support in those foundational courses. For students who are looking for a more rigorous course, we offer our Honors and AP courses. Our goal is to prepare all students for their next step after high school, be it a four-year university, a community college, a trade program, the workforce, or the military.
